Overview
In
general, bioinformatics involves the creation and development of
advanced information and computational technologies for problems in
molecular biology. Bioinformatics deals with methods for storing,
retrieving and analyzing biological data, such as nucleic acid (DNA/RNA)
and protein sequences, structures, functions, pathways and
interactions. What we now call bioinformatics has been synonymous with
the management and analysis of protein or nucleic acid sequences.
Nowadays, we are in the era of functional genomics, bioinformatics is
reinventing itself to go well beyond sequence analysis. It is about
statistical modeling of the output of functional genomics technologies.
Really, it is about biological data management and analysis.
Bioinformatics as a field of study is becoming increasingly important
due to the interest of the pharmaceutical industry in genome sequencing
projects, which comprise a key segment of the discipline. There is a
vital need to harness this information for medical diagnostic and
therapeutic uses, and there are opportunities for other industrial
applications. At KSI, our goal is to provide most relevant education
of
core technologies in Bioinformatics.
Bioinformatics uses computer software tools for database creation, data
management, data warehousing, data mining and global communication
network. Functional genomics, biomolecular structure, proteome analysis,
cell metabolism, biodiversity, downstream processing in chemical
engineering, drug design, vaccine design are some of the areas in which
bioinformatics is an integral component. Bioinformatics uses advances
in the area of computer science, information science, computer and
information technology, communication technology to solve complex
problems in life sciences and particularly in biotechnology.
Opportunities abound in bioinformatics, but qualified candidates are
hard to find. The need of well-trained professionals in this area is
sharply on the rise but there are very few training institutions in
the
world where such in-demand training is provided. Knowledge Systems
Institute is one of the few here in the United States.
In short, Bioinformatics deals with database creation, data analysis
and
modeling. Data capturing is done not only from printed material but
also
from network resources. Databases in biology are generally in the
multimedia form organized in relational database model. Modeling is
done
not only on single biological molecule but also on multiple systems
thus
requiring a use of high performance computing systems.
Who
should attend
KSI
offers Bioinformatics training at two levels:
- Bioinformatics Certificate Program
- MS degree Program in CIS with Bioinformatics concentration.
The Certificate in Bioinformatics is intended for individuals who want
to take advantage of the skills shortage in bioinformatics and apply
for
one of the many employment opportunities in academic, government and
industrial laboratories for research technicians, software engineers
and
research scientists with expertise in bioinformatics. The Certificate
in
Bioinformatics offers many benefits to participants and employers
requiring their staff to upgrade skills in bioinformatics.
What you will learn
KSI
offers this Certificate program that consists of six (6) courses to
help students broaden their career paths and get a boost for successful
career change, which requires no background or a bachelor's degree to
begin with.
Here
is a brief summary of the key areas:
o Molecular Biology
o Genomicso Proteomics
o Database
o Statistical Analysis
o Unix Operating System
o Perl Programming
Requirements
If
you want to receive college credits, you must submit an official
transcript, copy of diploma, and three letter of reference to the
Graduate School of Computer and Information Sciences. The program is
divided into three consecutive sections.
Section I:
CIS331 Database Programming (SQL)
CIS341 Unix Operating Systems
Section
II:
BIO378 Intro to Biology for Bioinformatics
CIS504 Programming Languages (Perl)
Section III:
