************************** * CALL FOR PARTICIPATION * ************************** !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Note the extended submission date ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1996 Pacific Workshop on Distributed Multimedia Systems Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Hong Kong, June 25-28, 1996 Theme of Workshop: The development of National Information Infrastructure (NII) is under way in many countries. NII is a seamless web of communications networks, computers, databases, and consumer electronics that will put vast amount of information at users' fingertips. This will transform the way people live, work, and interact with each other. Every kind of business will be changed as commerce, finance, government services, manufacturing of all kinds, education, entertainment, and health care employ multimedia. The modeling, specification, analysis and application of distributed multimedia systems present many challenging problems to both researchers and practitioners. This workshop offers a forum for practicing engineers and researchers to exchange ideas and learn from one another. In addition, tutorials will be held on June 25 and 26 to provide participants with opportunities for interaction with experts in the related fields. Through this call for paarticipation, the organizers seek contributions of high quality papers, panels or tutorials on the topics relevant to distributed multimedia systems which include (but are not limited to): . distributed multimedia databases and computing . multi-paradigmatic information retrieval . modeling and analysis of distributed multimedia systems . OS support for distributed multimedia systems . multimedia communications and networking . multimedia digital libraries and mail systems . multimedia human-computer interaction . multimedia applications for CSCW, distant education, electronic commerce, tele-conferencing, telemedicine, etc. . visual and multidimensional languages for multimedia applications The use of prototypes and demonstration video for presentations is encouraged. Selected papers will be considered for publication in a special issue of IEEE Multimedia. More information can be found at ``http://www.cs.umn.edu/research/dmc/dms96/''. Workshop Site: The workshop will be held at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), located in the scenic Clear Water Bay peninsula in East Kowloon of Hong Kong. Special arrangement will be made with local hotels for a limited number of rooms at the special workshop rate.
