The Second International Conference on Software Engineering and Knowledge Engineering June 21-23, 1990 The theme of this international conference is the interplay between software engineering and knowledge engineering: How knowledge engineering methods can be applied to software engineering, and how software engineering methods can be applied to knowledge engineering. Technical sessions cover the following topics: software engineering methods and practices, object-oriented systems, rapid prototyping, software reuse, clean- room software engineering, stepwise enhancement, knowledge engineering methods and practices, logic programming, expert systems, knowledge-based systems, deductive database systems, knowledge representation and applications. Forty five papers from fifteen nations or regions will be presented: Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Korea, Japan, Taiwan (Republic of China), USA, USSR, Yugoslavia. Pre-Conference tutorials and intensive courses cover knowledge-based information systems design, integrated computer-aided software engineering, software prototyping, object-oriented systems and knowledge engineering & expert systems. This is the second international conference on the interrelated topics of software engineering and knowledge engineering. After last year’s conference, the editors of the IEEE Transactions of Knowledge and Data Engineering approved my proposal to publish a Special Section on Knowledge Engineering and Software Engineering. A special section containing selected papers presented at the SEKE’89 conference, as well papers submitted subsequently in response to the Call-for-Papers published in the Transactions, will appear in the September 1990 issue of IEEE-TKDE. As program chair, l am impressed by the scope and quality of papers presented in this year’s conference. Several publishers have already approached us to publish a book based upon selected papers from this conference. Therefore, we anticipate that the series of conferences will have a significant impact on the SE & KE research community. We plan to hold next year’s conference, SEKE’91, again in Skokie, Illinois from June 21 to 23, 1991. In 1992, SEKE’92 will be held in Capri, Italy. Capri is the most beautiful island of Italy, and our Italian colleagues have al- ready begun to make preparations for SEKE’92. As a general policy, SEKE will go outside of the United States to a different country every third or fourth year. By having a base in Skokie, we will be able to promote the Participation of people from the United States. By Periodically going outside of the United States, we hope to make this conference truly international. On behalf of the Program committee, I would like to thank all participants and contributors, whose active participation has made this conference a success. Shi-Kuo Chang Program Chair
